Highbridge Cornhole gamers head to national finals

A team of Bakkavor colleagues from Highbridge are heading to a special sports final. And we’re not talking tennis, cricket, women’s football or rugby – but Cornhole.

Cornhole is an outdoor summer game that’s popular in North America. For a competitive match, teams take turns throwing fabric bean bags at an inclined board with a hole. The aim of the game is to score points, by either landing a bag on the board (one point) or putting a bag through the hole (three points).

As part of summer engagement activities, leading fresh prepared food manufacturer, Bakkavor, has been running a national Cornhole competition across its UK sites. The bean bag champs from Highbridge won the local heats and are now set to compete in the national finals, facing teams from as far afield Lincoln, Scotland and the North West.

More than 40 colleagues from the Highbridge site joined teams to enter the competition.

Beyond outdoor exploits with bean bags, Bakkavor in Highbridge has also put on many events– all part of their ‘Summer of SEF’ engagement campaign led by the site employee forum as a summer ‘thank you’ to colleagues. Strawberries and cream were served to colleagues during Wimbledon, followed by free ice creams from a local ice cream van. The business also ran a benefits awareness week for colleagues, aimed at ensuring all teams are aware of the benefits available to them supporting with their financial health and overall wellbeing.

Justin Charles, Head of Operations at Bakkavor Desserts in Highbridge comments: “We never knew we had colleagues with hidden bean bag skills on-site, but we are delighted that our site is taking part in the finals of Bakkavor’s national competition. To be honest, few of us had not heard of the Cornhole game before this, but it’s really gone down well. Along with our other colleague events, we’re keen to take time over the summer months to say thank you to colleagues for all their hard work. We’re a people business and we’re proud of our team and all that they achieve.”
