Compass issues safety alert for caravan owners as Storm Chandra threatens heavy floods

Compass, a specialist provider of caravan and leisure insurance, has issued advice for static caravan and lodge owners in the South West of the country, to protect their property from the damaging effects of Storm Chandra.

The Met Office has issued an amber alert for heavy rain for the region, with 30 to 50mm of rainfall predicted, and 60 to 80mm on higher ground, especially in south Dartmoor, increasing the risk of flooding in already saturated areas.

Essential actions for caravan owners

One of the biggest worries for caravan owners during these conditions is the heightened risk of flooding. Caravan parks and storage facilities are often situated on low-lying land or close to rivers, which leaves them particularly exposed when heavy rainfall causes water levels to rise quickly. In response, Compass is urging caravan owners to take the following actions:

During the storm:

  • Avoid towing or travelling with caravans in strong winds
  • Keep clear of caravan parks and storage sites located in known flood-risk areas
  • Stay up to date with weather warnings and guidance from local authorities
  • Ensure emergency contact numbers are easily accessible and fully charged phones are kept close
  • Secure loose items around caravans to prevent damage from high winds

Insurance considerations:

  • Check your insurance policy to confirm what protection is in place for storm and flood-related damage
  • Take clear photos of your caravan ahead of the severe weather to record its condition
  • Keep your policy reference and insurer contact information easy to find if needed
  • Notify your insurance provider of any damage promptly, once it is safe to do so

Kevin Minnear, Head of Underwriting at Compass, said: “It’s been less than three weeks since the South West saw one of the most impactful storms for a decade, Goretti. Now, hot on the heels of Storm Ingrid, the region is now hit with yet another severe weather event, while many areas are still struggling to recover.

“As a result, the threat of damage from flooding is significant, with the potential to cause devastating and costly damage to caravans. We would like to urge owners not to underestimate the risks – especially those in sites near rivers and low-lying areas. That said, all caravan owners should remain cautious, as weather systems can move and intensify with little warning.”
