New research ranks the UK’s best destinations for an autumn break, comparing hotel prices, visitor attractions, rainfall and overall value for money.
The Cornish harbour town of Fowey has been named the UK’s best-value destination for an autumn staycation, according to new research examining accommodation costs, attractions, rainfall and visitor satisfaction.
The study, conducted by credit card provider Zable, ranked destinations across the UK to identify places offering a combination of enjoyable experiences and value for money during the autumn months.
Cambridge secured second place, followed by Padstow in Cornwall, while Welsh destinations Hay-on-Wye and Tregaron also featured among the top ten.
The findings suggest that the cost of accommodation is not the only factor determining whether a destination offers good value, with free attractions, visitor ratings and local activities also contributing to the overall rankings.
Fowey Named the UK’s Best-Value Autumn Destination
Fowey, on Cornwall’s south coast, topped the ranking with an overall score of 7.94.
The historic port town recorded the highest proportion of highly rated attractions in the study, with 91% receiving visitor ratings of four stars or above.
Although its average hotel price of £238.75 is relatively high compared with some other destinations, visitors can enjoy several attractions without paying an admission fee.
These include Readymoney Cove, a sheltered beach popular for coastal walks, and Fowey’s historic harbour, where visitors can explore the waterfront, independent shops and surrounding streets.
The town is also well positioned for exploring the South West Coast Path, with autumn offering opportunities to enjoy the Cornish coastline outside the busiest summer holiday period.
Cambridge Takes Second Place
Cambridge ranked second with a score of 7.85, combining historic attractions with comparatively low autumn rainfall.
The university city recorded average rainfall of 59.47mm in the study, making it one of the drier destinations in the top ten.
Its average hotel price was listed as £150.11, although the accompanying press release also quoted £50.11, an inconsistency travellers should be aware of when comparing costs.
Visitors can explore the city’s historic streets, university buildings and riverside walks, while the Fitzwilliam Museum offers free admission to its permanent collections.
Cambridge is also well suited to shorter city breaks, with its compact centre making many attractions accessible on foot.
Padstow Ranks Third Despite Higher Hotel Prices
Padstow completed the top three with an overall score of 7.85.
The Cornish fishing town was among the more expensive destinations for accommodation, with an average hotel price of £389.85.
However, it performed strongly for visitor satisfaction, with 82% of attractions receiving ratings of at least four stars.
Padstow is known for its harbour, restaurants and access to the Camel Trail, a popular walking and cycling route following a former railway line.
Autumn visitors can also explore nearby beaches and coastal paths, with opportunities to experience the area outside the peak summer season.
The research recorded approximately 36.4 million Instagram posts associated with Padstow, although social media popularity does not necessarily indicate affordability.

Yorkshire and Wales Offer Attractive Autumn Alternatives
Beyond the top three, several smaller towns performed well in the rankings.
Hebden Bridge, in West Yorkshire, placed fourth. Known for its independent shops, cafés and surrounding Pennine countryside, the town offers opportunities for walking and exploring the Calder Valley.
Hay-on-Wye, on the Wales-England border, ranked fifth with a score of 7.51.
The Powys market town is internationally recognised for its bookshops and literary connections, making it an appealing destination for visitors interested in independent shopping, culture and countryside walks.
Ledbury in Herefordshire followed in sixth place. Its timber-framed buildings, historic streets and proximity to the Malvern Hills make it a popular base for exploring the surrounding countryside.
Rye in East Sussex placed seventh, offering cobbled streets, historic architecture and access to the nearby coast.
Penzance, another Cornish destination, ranked eighth, with visitors able to explore its seafront, galleries and surrounding West Cornwall landscape.
Tregaron Offers the Cheapest Accommodation in the Ranking
Tregaron in Ceredigion was identified as the most affordable destination for accommodation, with an average hotel price of £105.20.
The Mid Wales town ranked ninth overall, despite recording the highest autumn rainfall among the top ten at 116.17mm.
Located near Cors Caron National Nature Reserve and within reach of the Cambrian Mountains, Tregaron provides a base for visitors interested in walking, wildlife and rural landscapes.
Its inclusion demonstrates that lower accommodation costs can make smaller destinations attractive to travellers working with a limited budget.
At the opposite end of the study, Bakewell in Derbyshire recorded the highest average hotel price at £515.82.
Knaresborough Completes the Top Ten
Knaresborough in North Yorkshire took tenth place with an overall score of 7.00.
The market town is known for its dramatic railway viaduct, riverside walks and historic streets overlooking the River Nidd.
Its average hotel price was recorded at £248.10, while 65% of attractions received visitor ratings of four stars or above.
Sunday Roast Prices Also Compared
As part of its wider assessment of autumn travel costs, Zable also examined the price of a traditional Sunday roast.
Whitby in North Yorkshire emerged as the most affordable destination for this particular meal, with an average price of £16.78.
Cambridge recorded the highest average Sunday roast price at £24.34.
The figures highlight how food and drink costs can affect the overall budget for a short break, particularly for families or visitors staying for several nights.
How to Get Better Value From an Autumn Staycation
While the research provides a comparison of destinations, travellers should consider several factors before choosing where to stay.
Accommodation prices can vary significantly depending on the dates, property type and availability. Booking midweek or outside school holidays may offer savings compared with popular weekends.
Free attractions can also help reduce spending, particularly in destinations with accessible coastal paths, museums, historic town centres and nature reserves.
Travellers planning countryside or coastal activities should check local weather forecasts and opening times, as some seasonal attractions may operate reduced hours during autumn.
Transport costs are another important consideration. A destination with inexpensive accommodation may not necessarily represent the cheapest overall break if reaching it requires a long journey or additional car hire.
The Zable rankings provide a useful starting point for comparing destinations, but individual travel costs will depend on accommodation choices, transport arrangements and planned activities.
With several towns and cities offering free attractions alongside accommodation at a range of prices, autumn can provide opportunities to explore different parts of the UK without travelling overseas.
