Student in Cornwall? Why not consider a care job this summer

Young people looking for work over the summer months are urged to consider a role in Cornwall’s care sector.

Many care providers are currently looking for staff to support people to live as independently as possible, whether it’s in a care home or helping people in their own homes.

Queenie Earle, aged 17, works part time for Trelawny Care. She started off in a work placement and now works part time while she completes her college course. She said: “I wouldn’t be the person I am today if I hadn’t taken a leap of faith and taken on a role in the care sector.

“I can honestly say it’s one of the best things I’ve ever done, it’s made me the person I am now. The most rewarding part is going into somebody’s home and making a difference to their day.”

Cornwall Council cabinet member for adult social care and health Cllr Andy Virr said: “I myself worked in a care home while I was studying and it was a great way to earn some extra money, but it also helped me to understand more about health and care roles which is what I was interested in.

“Whatever your current studies are though, it is such a rewarding thing to do and I can really recommend giving it a go.”

Proud to Care Cornwall currently has over 150 roles advertised on their website. You can also find out more about what it’s like to work in care and the different sorts of roles available.

You can also find out more by listening to the first episode of the Proud to Care Cornwall podcast where training and recruitment specialist Michaela Gill talks about her journey through the care sector, talking about the challenges and the rewards.
