A new 10-year strategy aimed at addressing the wide-ranging factors that influence body weight has been launched in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. The Healthier Weight Strategy for Cornwall and Isles of Scilly, developed by Cornwall Council’s public health team, takes a holistic approach to tackling obesity by focusing on environmental, social, and systemic influences rather than individual behaviours alone.
A Compassionate Approach to Health and Wellbeing
The strategy, published to coincide with World Obesity Day, highlights the complex nature of weight management and aims to shift perceptions around obesity. Interim Director of Public Health for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, Eunan O’Neill, emphasized the importance of addressing weight-related stigma.
“We live in a society that shows inherent bias around people who are overweight and obese, and we are committed to embedding a compassionate approach and reducing weight stigma,” said O’Neill. “We want the next generation to grow up with choices around their health, wellbeing, and happiness.”
Understanding the Wider Factors Influencing Weight
Rather than focusing solely on individual actions like diet and exercise, the strategy acknowledges the 108 different factors identified as contributing to higher-than-average body weight. Dr. Andy Virr, Cornwall Council’s cabinet lead for adult social care and health, underscored the importance of addressing these systemic influences.
“Obesity is a complex disease which continues to impact much of the population. We know that it is about more than just eating less and moving more,” he said. “To address the issue, we must look at the systems around us that have influence, such as the media, access to physical activity, and food production.”
The strategy aims to create a healthier food environment, ensure communities have access to physical activity, and build on existing local initiatives that promote better health outcomes.
Goals and Support Available
The key objectives of the strategy include supporting people in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly to maintain a healthier weight at or below the England average and reducing health inequalities associated with obesity. The initiative builds upon successful local programs offering practical support, including activity sessions, healthcare interventions, and community-led initiatives.
Residents can access resources and support through Healthy Cornwall, which offers guidance on topics such as healthy pregnancy, weaning, cooking, physical activity, and nutrition. Services are available in-person and digitally, ensuring accessibility for all.
