Play area and car park devolved to Newquay Town Council

A play area and car park in Newquay have been devolved to the town council.

Atlantic Road Car Park and the adjacent playpark, one of the newest in the town, were formally transferred to Newquay Town Council on October 7.

The transfer will ensure that decisions regarding the future of these community assets are led by the local community.

Mayor of Newquay and Cornwall Councillor for Newquay Central and Pentire Louis Gardner said: “The transfer of Atlantic Road Car Park from Cornwall Council to Newquay Town Council represents a real step-change in the devolution programme. This is the first time that a revenue generating asset has been transferred in Newquay and it gives the Town Council a real chance to take an active part in the parking solution for Newquay.”

Over the coming weeks Newquay Town Council will be looking closely at charging structures and the current facilities in order to maximise the use of the site by the people of Newquay.

Cllr Gardner added: “We aim to maintain this playpark to an extremely high standard and keep it as one of the premium facilities in Newquay.”

Carol Mould, Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhoods at Cornwall Council, said: “Devolving control and ownership of the car park and play area will ensure that future decisions regarding both assets will be led by the community.

“This is a great example of partnership working and we are delighted that the transfer has been made for the benefit of the Town and its residents.

“We will continue to work with Town and Parish Councils to support them to deliver services which are managed at the most appropriate level.”
