Cornwall Council welcomes funding announcement to help tackle potholes

Richard Williams-Pears, the council’s portfolio holder for transport, has welcomed a government funding announcement to tackle potholes and carry out road resurfacing.

Cornwall is set to benefit from £3.7 million this year and £3.7 million next year, with similar funding indicated for each year up to 2033 totalling £111 million.

Richard said: “This funding represents an investment into a Cornish highways network that will see better quality roads and improved connectivity for residents, visitors, and businesses. The road network is vital for our residents in keeping communities connected, as well as for the wider economy of Cornwall and this funding will help ensure that Cornwall can have one of the best maintained rural road networks in the country.”

“Resources will be prioritised to deal with an increase in potholes that have formed on our roads due to the poor weather over the winter which plays a big part in their formation.”

The council already invests around £40 million a year in maintaining and improving the 7,250 kilometres (4,530 miles) road network, which ranges from busy A roads to narrow rural roads.
