Midland Fire Secures Morrisons-Owned Fish Factory in Redruth Amid Growing Calls for UK Food Supply Safety

Redruth, Cornwall — As concerns mount over the resilience of the UK’s food supply chain, Midland Fire Security Services Ltd has completed a major safety overhaul of Falfish — the seafood supplier owned by Morrisons — helping to protect one of Britain’s most critical fresh food sites.
Appointed by Intelect Midlands Ltd, Midland Fire played a crucial role in upgrading the fire and security systems at Falfish’s Redruth site, ensuring uninterrupted seafood production for one of the UK’s largest supermarket chains.
“In an industry where fire or contamination can shut down operations overnight, protecting this site was about more than just compliance — it’s about keeping food on supermarket shelves,” said Daniel Thompson, Contracts Manager at Midland Fire.
Securing the Catch of the Day
The Falfish site supplies a significant portion of Morrisons’ fresh seafood — a supply chain that became even more vital after the supermarket acquired the family-run business in 2021 and became the first UK retailer to own a fishing boat.
With food factories facing increasing threats — from ammonia leaks to vandalism and theft — fire and security systems are no longer optional extras but essential infrastructure.
What Was Installed:
FAAST aspiration system in warehouse areas for ultra-early smoke detection

ATEX-rated alarms in ammonia-based refrigeration areas to prevent explosions

Integrated ammonia alarm linkage for instant response to gas leaks

HKC intruder system with PIRs, roller door contacts and EMCS remote monitoring

All works were completed in just under three months.
Dave Dawson, Project Manager at Intelect Midlands Ltd, added, “Midland Fire were professional, diligent, and always ready with advice — a key player in making this project a success. We’d work with them again in a heartbeat.”

A Fire-Safe Future for Sustainable Seafood
Falfish, which has supplied seafood since 1979, is also a passionate advocate for sustainable fishing and marine conservation. The site supports dozens of local fishing families and coastal jobs — further highlighting the importance of keeping its operations safe and secure.
“We’re proud to protect not just a site, but a business that supports environmental stewardship and local livelihoods,” said Thompson.
