Why Participate in Sports as a Family?

It’s pretty uncontroversial to say that everyone can benefit from exercise. It will improve your health and quality of life in an almost unbelievable variety of ways – and so finding an activity that you enjoy can be invaluable.

If you’ve got a family, then you might also enjoy spending time with them. If you can encourage everyone to get involved in a particular sport, then you’ll multiply the benefits of both.

Why sport?

Playing sport – and especially team sports – will allow you to bond with your family, as well as inspiring a little bit of the friendly competition that will get everyone enthused about the next session. Whether it’s tennis, football, cricket, or water polo – family sports can be priceless.

Encouraging sport

If you try to force everyone to enjoy a sport that they’re not really interested in, then you’ll only end up generating resentment. Instead, respond when they show an interest. You might start watching a sport in order to generate enthusiasm – and to pick up a few tips from the professionals along the way.

In many households, buying a child a football shirt that matches with the family’s chosen team is a little bit of a rite of passage. You don’t have to insist that they support the same team as you (though many football families will do exactly this). A shared passion will help everyone to bond, and to get into the spirit of things – provided that it’s not an imposition.

Social benefits

Pick the right sport, and the chances are good that you’ll come across other families who are doing exactly the same thing, and for exactly the same reason. If you’re able to make friends who are involved with the sport, then you’ll be more inclined to stick with it – and the activity will be that much more enjoyable.

Mental and physical health benefits

It’s worth dwelling on some of the health benefits that come with exercise. It will help you to build and maintain muscle mass, which will reduce your risk of injury as you age. It will also reduce your risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes and many other problems.

By making exercise and physical play a normal thing for your children, you’ll help to set them up with the right habits for later in life, and increase their chances of enjoying good health in the future. What’s more, you’ll provide them with an inherently fulfilling use of their leisure time.
